Visit To Galleries In Leicester

Over the summer, Carina (a fellow art student) and I planned on visiting a couple of art galleries in Leicester known as, New Walk Museum and Art Gallery as well as Whitewall Gallery. My intention was to see if there were any pieces of art that would help inspire me to progress with my work.

Whitewall Gallery, HighCross, Leicester

The first gallery that we visited was Whitewall, which was relatively small yet had a variety of types of artwork. I was only inspired by one particular work created by Sarah Stokes. Although we weren't allowed to take photos, I researched afterwards on the Whitewall Galleries website to find photos that I could refer to.

This piece really stood out to me as the expression in marks resembles the marks that Amy Hamilton uses in her work, however slightly more controlled. Additionally, I really like the use of colour and how there are certain tones that are unrealistic, creating a slightly surreal feeling to the composition. I think that when it comes to my work, I am going to use similar marks and colour themes by layering onto the pen work in the style of Vince Low; this will improve contrast in marks and colour more successfully. The composition is also similar to Amy Hamilton's as the animal is centralised onto the background.

Meanwhile, we then went to the New Walk Museum and Art Gallery. Although I am fully against taxidermy, I was interested by the animal exhibit. The photos that I took of the animals are good enough to work from when creating my work.
Lion, Zebra, Doe, Various Birds
Small bird
Tiger
Wild cat
When it comes to working with these photos, I am going to use similar marks to those of Amy Hamilton and Sarah Stokes. The colour palette that both of these artists use will work extremely well with these animals, in particular the birds and tiger.
